Candle Care 101: Maximizing Your Burn Time

Candle Care 101: Maximizing Your Burn Time

The Secret of Wax Memory

Did you know that soy wax has a "memory"? The most important burn is the very first one. When you light a new Sattva candle, you must let it burn until the melt pool reaches the absolute edges of the glass jar (usually 2-3 hours). If you blow it out too early, the candle will remember that small ring and tunnel downwards for the rest of its life, leaving wasted wax on the sides.

Always Trim Your Wicks!

Before every single burn, you should trim your wick to about 1/4 inch. Why?

  • It prevents the flame from getting too large and creating black soot.
  • It prolongs the life of the candle by ensuring it burns at a steady, slow pace.
  • It gives you a cleaner, brighter flame.

We highly recommend investing in a proper matte black wick trimmer, which allows you to easily reach into the jar as the candle burns down.

Knowing When to Say Goodbye

For safety reasons, you should stop burning your candle when there is only 1/2 inch of wax left at the bottom. Burning it any lower can cause the glass jar to overheat and potentially crack. But don't throw the jar away! Clean out the remaining wax with hot soapy water and repurpose the beautiful amber glass as a makeup brush holder or a small planter.
